Was at a Dodgers game when I saw another fan with a few banh mis from Banh Mi How Phat. Was intrigued as they were in a cardboard box vs. being wrapped in a piece of paper.
A quick search revealed that this banh mi shop was sort of on my way to work. No better way to start the work week than with a banh mi for bfast. Called in my order as I was driving in and they were ready for me by the time I arrived.
Though the crispy pork was awesome, I was expecting the pork skin to be crispier. The siu yook had the perfect fat to meat ratio. To be fair, I didn't eat the banh mi right away and I'm not sure how long they were sitting on the counter waiting for me to pick up. The bread had a nice crunch and the inside had a bit of a bite to it.
Will have to come back and eat one in the store as well as to try their other sandwiches.
This is what a Vietnamese sandwich shop should be like. The shop was small but easily accessible. Moderately clean and full of people shoving Vietnamese Bahn Mi’s in their mouth without talking. No one is talking in the store except for the person taking orders and the people ordering. We tried three of their sandwiches, the “viral” crispy pork belly, the Dac Biet (combination), and the grilled pork. The grilled pork was the least interesting but was still very delicious. The crispy pork was definitely “viral” for a reason, and the combination was the stand out star. The combination is what a real Vietnamese sandwich should taste like. The ingredients were fresh, tasted natural without any neon colors, and the pate was smooth and delicious. The pickles were perfect without being sickly sweet and the bread was crispy and Goldilocks firm. The prices are extremely fair at around $7 for the regular sandwiches and $8 for the roasted pork belly. We ordered a few to go and the packaging was beautifully presented. The pickles were packaged separately from the cucumbers and herbs and the sandwich had a window that was reminiscent of a peep show in Amsterdam showing off a naughty little sandwich just waiting to be eaten. If not for the location being at the back end of a plaza with traffic being utterly stupid at all times, this place would be a destination sandwich shop for all to seek.
It's a ok place to try some fried pork sandwich. However, there are some areas they can improve on. 1. The pork was pretty cold, they could have at least heat up the meat before putting in the bread. 2. The place definitely needs some clean up, there are few tables but food residual everywhere, I even step on a price of pork belly on my way out. Trashcan is fill way above the capacity.
The best Bánh Mì Heo Quay in town! (Crispy Pork Belly Banh Mi)
The pork belly skin is perfectly crunchy.
The pâté and butter are unique and flavorful.
Vegetables on the side are a nice touch, but it would be even better if they were added in, it makes the bánh mì full of flavor.
The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft inside, holding everything together beautifully.
Highly recommended for authentic Vietnamese bánh mì!
Plus, the Rau Má (green veggie juice) is super fresh and refreshing.
visited Banh Mi Hoa pHat in Monterey Park on June 3rd, 2025, and tried their crispy pork belly banh mi.
$7.75 before tax
The pork chunks were tender and flavorful, with a satisfyingly crispy skin that added great texture to every bite. generous portion of additional toppings—fresh jalapeños, pickled carrots and daikon, and other veggies.
The bread was light and crusty, holding everything together without getting soggy. It hit all the right notes for a solid banh mi experience.
The service was fast and efficient, making it a great stop for a quick, tasty meal. Banh Mi Hoa phat isn’t a flashy place—it’s straightforward and casual, but it delivers where it counts: quality and value. I appreciated the relaxed, no-frills vibe of the spot. I’d definitely return next time I’m in the area.
